Terms

Last updated: July 21, 2026

Not legal advice. Not a law firm. CiteSafe is software for citation existence and format/risk signals. It does not create an attorney-client relationship, does not practice law, and does not replace Westlaw, Lexis, official reporters, or your professional judgment. You remain solely responsible for filings, grades, and ethical duties.

1. Acceptance

By using citesafe.co or related demos/apps, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. Who operates CiteSafe

CiteSafe (“we,” “us,” or “Operator”) operates citesafe.co. Contact: hello@citesafe.co · security@citesafe.co · privacy@citesafe.co.

Enterprise customers may request a signed Data Processing Addendum. Subprocessors: /subprocessors.

3. The service

CiteSafe helps check whether citations appear to exist and may surface labels such as Verified, Needs Review, or Could Not Verify. Existence does not mean a source supports your argument, is good law, is correctly quoted, or is safe to file. Always confirm critical citations on authoritative commercial or official sources before relying on them.

4. Your responsibilities

  • You remain solely responsible for filings, assignments, and professional duties.
  • Confirm critical citations on Westlaw, Lexis, official reporters, or other authoritative sources before filing or submission.
  • Do not use CiteSafe to commit fraud, mislead a court or school, or violate rules of professional conduct or academic integrity.
  • Only upload documents you are authorized to process.
  • Prefer cite-only mode for client work. Full document mode increases disclosure to Operator and subprocessors; no privilege is created with CiteSafe.
  • Keep credentials secure; you are responsible for activity under your account.
  • Do not submit sealed filings, highly sensitive personal data, or content you lack authority to process, especially in Full document mode.

4A. Customer content license & privacy

You retain rights to content you submit. You grant Operator a limited license to process content solely to provide the service (extract citations, run checks, show results, secure the service). We do not sell your documents. We do not train public generative models on customer content. Default verify does not persist request bodies to a CiteSafe database. Details: Privacy Policy.

5. Beta software & no warranties

Features may be incomplete, change, or contain errors.including false positives/negatives on citation checks. THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.” TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OPERATOR DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

6. Accounts & acceptable use

Do not reverse engineer, scrape at abusive volume, overload, resell, or sublicense the service without written permission. Do not attempt to bypass security or access others’ data. We may suspend or terminate access for abuse, legal risk, or non-payment.

7. Intellectual property

CiteSafe branding, site design, software, and documentation are owned by CiteSafe or licensors. You retain rights to documents you upload; you grant Operator a limited license to process them solely to provide the service. You may not use “CiteSafe” or Operator’s name to imply endorsement without written permission.

8. Third-party names & trademarks

CiteSafe is an independent product. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Google, Microsoft, Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis, CourtListener, Free Law Project, Harvard, or any other third party whose product or service may be mentioned for identification or comparison.

Third-party names and marks remain the property of their owners. References are nominative only.not a claim of partnership.

9. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, CITESAFE AND ITS OPERATORS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; LOST PROFITS; LOST DATA; SANCTIONS; MALPRACTICE CLAIMS; ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE; OR PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINE ARISING FROM USE OF THE SERVICE.EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY.

TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATED TO THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNTS YOU PAID US FOR CITESAFE IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS (US $50) IF YOU PAID NOTHING.WHICHEVER IS GREATER ONLY UP TO AMOUNTS ACTUALLY PAID WHERE APPLICABLE.

10. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless CiteSafe and its agents from claims, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising from: (a) your use of CiteSafe; (b) your documents or outputs you rely on; (c) your filings or submissions; (d) your violation of these Terms, Privacy Policy, or law; (e) your infringement of others’ rights.

11. Termination

We may suspend or end access at any time for breach, abuse, legal risk, or operational reasons. Sections that by nature should survive (IP, disclaimers, liability limits, indemnity, governing law) survive termination.

12. Governing law & disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and applicable U.S. federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Exclusive venue for disputes is state or federal courts in Virginia, unless Operator agrees otherwise in writing. Good-faith negotiation for 30 days before filing is encouraged.

13. Experimental & preview features

Some features may be labeled experimental, preview, scaffold, or beta (including, without limitation, treatment/citator-style signals, citation graphs, quote/pin checks, judge profiles, litigation risk scores, research agents, and Legal OS terminal commands). Those features:

  • are provided solely for analytical aid and may be incomplete or wrong;
  • are not KeyCite, Shepard's, or any commercial citator equivalent;
  • do not certify good law, holding support, quote accuracy, or court acceptance;
  • do not predict case outcomes or guarantee any result; and
  • must not be relied on as a substitute for professional legal research and judgment.

Labels such as "Verified" mean only that CiteSafe's configured layers returned an existence/form signal under its methodology. See Sources & methodology.

14. Third-party data sources

CiteSafe may query or display links to third-party public indexes and sites (including CourtListener / Free Law Project, Caselaw Access Project, GovInfo, Cornell LII, eCFR, Google Scholar, and others). Those services have their own terms, availability, and accuracy limits. Operator is not responsible for third-party downtime, rate limits, content errors, or license changes. You must comply with third-party terms when using linked services.

15. Professional responsibility & sanctions risk

Courts and bar authorities have sanctioned lawyers for fabricated or non-existent citations. Using CiteSafe does not satisfy any duty of competence, candor, or supervision by itself. You (or your supervising attorney) remain solely responsible for verifying authorities before filing or relying on them. A CiteSafe status of Verified, Needs Review, or Could Not Verify is a software signal only - not a certification for court, school, or client use.

16. Changes; severability; entire agreement

We may update these Terms. Continued use after posting constitutes acceptance for future use. If any provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement regarding the service unless a signed writing says otherwise. No waiver unless in writing signed by Operator.
