CiteSafe for Microsoft Word

Independent task pane: verify citation existence and fabrication risk after any draft. Not legal advice. Not affiliated with other Word add-ins, AI writers, or commercial research publishers.

If you saw a wall of XML in the browser — that is normal

manifest.xml is a config file for Word, not a website. Browsers show raw XML. You must download the file, then upload it inside Word (steps below). Do not expect the XML page to “look styled.”

Backup download page

Saves as CiteSafe-Word-manifest.xml — use that file in Word’s Upload My Add-in dialog. Never open it as a browser tab.

Install in Word (Windows desktop)

  1. Click Download manifest for Word above.
  2. Open Microsoft Word (desktop app, not word.office.com only).
  3. InsertGet Add-ins / Add-insMy Add-ins Upload My Add-in (or Shared Folder / Browse).
  4. Choose the downloaded CiteSafe-Word-manifest.xml from your Downloads folder.
  5. On the Home ribbon, click CiteSafe to open the task pane.
  6. Select text or use Verify document.

If “Upload My Add-in” is missing: your org may block sideloading. Use Microsoft 365 Admin Center → Settings → Integrated apps → Upload custom apps, or add a trusted catalog (File → Options → Trust Center → Trusted Add-in Catalogs).

Microsoft 365 admin (org-wide deploy)

  1. Download CiteSafe-Word-manifest.xml.
  2. Go to Microsoft 365 admin center SettingsIntegrated apps Upload custom apps.
  3. Upload the manifest XML and assign users/groups.
  4. Users restart Word; CiteSafe appears under Home.
